 New York is the largest city in the USA and the biggest seaport. It is the business centre of the United States.
New York is situated in the mouth of the Hudson river. In comparison with such ancient historical cities as, say, Rome, London, Moscow or Paris, New York is quite young. It was founded in 1613 by Dutch settlers.There are five districts in the city: Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Richmond.  Manhattan is the central and the oldest part of the city. It is the district of business and finance. It is here in Wall Street that many business offices, banks and the world famous New York stock exchange are situated. The New York stock exchange dominates business life of many countries. The Statue of Liberty, which is on Liberty Island, was a present from France in 1876 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of American independence. This statue and a few 18th and 19th century churches, hospitals, newspaper offices and other buildings are the only examples of "old" architecture in New York.  Wherever your eyes travel, everywhere you can see sky-scrapers. New York, one of the USA leading manufacturing cities, is the home of great firms and banks. The most important branches of industry are those producing vehicles, glass, chemicals and all kinds of machinery. The city has very busy traffic. Its streets and highways are full of cars and buses.  The mouth of the Hudson river makes an excellent harbour for numerous passengers and cargo ships from all over the world.  Speaking about New York one can't but mention the outstanding role, the city plays, in the cultural life of the country. New York has many museums and art galleries which have collected works of art of many peoples and of all times. Many of them are on constant display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of Art. Most of the theatres and cinemas are in or near Broadway, the longest street and the biggest shopping district in New York. Because of its size and population, the city can be an intimidating (лякаючим) place to navigate. New York has made an effort toward creating a safe and pleasant experience for travellers and residents (мандрівники і жителі) by continually renovating (постійно ремонтуя) the public transportation system and the city's roads.
 Whether traveling by bus, subway, taxi or on foot, don't be afraid to ask questions if you're feeling lost. New Yorkers are usually willing to share their knowledge of the city.
Public Transportation
Public transport in New York is a safe, efficient and inexpensive way to see the city. A MetroCard is the pass you'll need to use buses and the subway. You can buy the card at any subway station. If you end up using public transport more than four times in one day, buy a One-day Fun Pass instead of a regular MetroCard.
Unlimited MetroCard passes allow you to pay a fixed fee in exchange for using public transportation as much as you want during a defined period of time. There are one-day, seven-day, 14-day and 30-day passes. Seven-day, 14-day and 30-day passes will save you money if you are using public transport more than twice a day.
When you're taking the subway or a bus, check the signs to make sure you're going in the right direction. Some subways have separate entrances for downtown and uptown trains, and you won't get a refund (отримати відшкодування) if you swipe your card at the wrong station.
 If you're unsure about the train's direction, ask a fellow passenger or an attendant. If you're feeling lost on the streets, find the nearest subway station. Each station has a map near its entrance with a detailed view of the surrounding streets and your location. Most station booths with attendants will have free subway maps to help you use the public transportation system.
MetroCard Transfers
MetroCards give you a free transfer within two hours of swiping your card. These transfers allow you to transfer from subway to bus, from bus to subway, from bus to bus and from subway to other select subways for free. Subway to subway transfers are only free if you need to leave the subway station to connect to another subway line. If you take the bus one direction uptown and take the subway system back downtown within two hours, the system will only charge you for one ride.
Buses
Buses can be a fast option if you need to get from Manhattan's East Side to its West Side. It also is convenient for getting to places in the east and west sides of Manhattan that cannot be reached by subway. If you pay for bus fare by cash, instead of by MetroCard, ask for a transfer from your driver.
The transfer will only be applicable to other bus rides. When you want to request a stop, pull the cord running along the top of the sides of the bus, or press the plastic blue band next to the windows. This will notify the driver and light up a "Stop Requested" sign at the front of the bus.
Enter a bus through the front door and exit through the back door. Local buses can make stops every few blocks according the requests of its passengers, whereas the express buses will only stop at predetermined cross streets. There is usually a sign in the front window to signify if a bus is local or express. Ask the driver if you are unsure.
Taxis
If you have a large group travelling together, taxis can be an affordable, faster option than public transportation. Look for the lights on top of the taxis to determine whether a taxi is free before hailing it.
If only the center of the light with the cab's medallion number is lit, the taxi is free to take passengers. If the light is completely illuminated, including the medallion number and the sides, the taxi is off-duty. If the taxi has no lights, then the cab already has passengers. When it's raining, finding an available cab is tricky, and it's often more convenient to take the subway.
Taxis in New York do not offer arranged pick-up services. If you want to be picked up at a specific time, you'll have to call a private car company. Restaurant and hotels will have listings of reliable private car companies. Всплеск притока мигрантов начался после гражданской войны.
В 1886 году Нью-Йорку был передан один из его символов — Статуя Свободы. В эти же года в Нью-Йорке начали строиться небоскребы. В 1889 году на Бродвее был воздвигнут первый в Нью-Йорке небоскреб — Тауэр-билдинг, в в 1930 Эмпайр-стейт-билдинг и Крайслер-билдинг.
11 сентября 2001 года на долго запомнится Нью-Йорку и всему миру как день самого чудовищного теракта, унесшего тысячи жизней и уничтожившего 2 самых высоких здания Нью-Йорка.
