London is a huge metropolitan area that is why public transport is vitally important for the city dwellers as well as tourists, for whom it might be quite confusing to get about London. British transport system is reliable and quite cheap.

http://cdn.makeagif.com/media/11-12-201 ... gifHowever, due to the increase of car ownership, London traffic has become 3 times as heavy as it used to be and the length of the traffic jams increased dramatically. As a result, the problem of fatal car accidents appeared.



Apart from taxies, there are 2 main methods of transport in London: the Underground and the buses.

Buses are best for sightseeing, especially double-decker buses. However, they are rather slow, especially during the rush hour. On the traditional double-decker there were no doors and passengers leaped up and off the bus and conductor was moving about and collecting fares from the passengers. However, nowadays fares are given directly to the driver or to the machine. Moreover, London transport has recently introduced single-decker buses which are called "Red Arrows".



London Underground, which is also called Tube, offers people more convenient, speedy and direct form of travel. The Underground was opened at the end of the 19th century, in 1884.





Now there are more than 270 stations. You can recognize the Tube stations by the red and blue signs at the street level. There is no fixed fare, because it depends on the distance you travel. You can buy a ticket or a ticket-stub from a booking office clerk or from a machine.

There are 8 different underground lines in the London Underground system. The travellers, who are not familiar with the Tube, should always consult the map.



So, London transport system is rapid and fast, but sometimes it can be really confusing.

London Buses

London buses are a quick, convenient and chiepest way to travel around London, with plenty of sightseeing opportunities en route.The typical bus in London is a red double-decker. The first London bus started running between Paddington and the City in 1829. It carried 40 passengers and cost a shilling for six kms. London's bus network is extensive, with over 6,800 scheduled services every weekday carrying about six million passengers on over 700 different routes making it one of the most extensive bus systems in the world and by far the largest in Europe.

London Tube

London's Underground rail network, or "the Tube" as it is known, is normally the quickest and easiest way of travelling around London. Colloquially known as the Tube, London Underground is the first metro system in the world, having begun operations in 1863.

More than 3 million passengers travel on the Underground every day, amounting to over 1 billion passenger journeys per year for the first time in 2006. The Underground has 11 lines, most of which connect the suburbs to Central London and provide a distribution role around the city centre, particularly from major railway terminals.

The Underground serves North London much more extensively than South London. This is the result of a combination of unfavourable geology, historical competition from surface railways and the historical geography of London which was focused to the north of the Thames. South London is served primarily by surface railways (although it should be noted that the majority of London Underground's route length is actually on the surface rather than in tunnel.).


Docklands Light Railway

The innovative, driverless Docklands Light Railway (DLR) serves parts of East and South East London including Canary Wharf. The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is an automated light rail system serving the Docklands area of east London. It complements the Underground, largely sharing its fares system and having a number of interchanges with it. It is focused on the Canary Wharf business district, although this was not its initial objective upon its opening in 1987.

River Bus Services

Travelling by river is a great way to travel across London. You'll beat the traffic and soak up some fantastic views along the way!

Local Trains

Use London's local trains and Overground network to travel across the city and beyond the Tube.

London Trams

Trams run in parts of South London between Wimbledon, Croydon, Beckenham and New Addington. The services are frequent and accessible.

The former tram system in London was the oldest in the world dating back to early Victorian time and still remains the largest tram network at its peak. The extensive tram lines disappeared from the streets of London by the mid-20th century, but a new tram system was opened in 2000 to serve the large employment centre of Croydon on the southern edge of London.
